Art Gallery M84 is proud to announce "Eclipse – Where Beauty Resides," a solo exhibition by Misuzu Shibuya, opening Monday, November 3, 2025.
As the gallery’s 158th exhibition, "Eclipse" transcends mere realism. It captures the "ideals and longings for female beauty" while unveiling the madness and sorrow that lurk beneath. The works evoke an uncanny fear—akin to peering into a hall of mirrors—while simultaneously drawing deep empathy from the viewer.
Shibuya seeks to photograph the shifting values of beauty and ugliness, and whatever exists beyond them. While her earlier work focused intensely on facial features, her fascination has evolved toward the "beauty of the physical form" and the "divinity residing within." Her current practice treats the female body sculpturally to manifest a sense of the divine and the spiritual.
In her "goddess" series, Shibuya draws motifs from Greek mythology and Shinto shrine maidens (miko). By sharing narratives with her subjects and allowing them to surrender to these worlds, she captures subconscious movements and gazes—unearthing deep-seated expressions that the subjects themselves have yet to discover.
