ARTIST STATEMENT

Misuzu Shibuya's practice explores the space beyond conventional notions of beauty and ugliness. Approaching the female body as a unified presence rather than a surface to be admired, she engages with both its materiality and the subtle sense of sacredness that emerges from within.

Her figures are treated sculpturally, appearing as sites where corporeality and spirituality quietly intersect. Rooted in a distinctly Japanese aesthetic sensibility, her work rejects ornamentation in favor of inner tension and dignity. Moving beyond realism, she constructs spiritual and idealized images of womanhood—images that hover between serenity and unease. Beneath their composed surfaces lie traces of fragility, sorrow, and latent intensity, inviting viewers to look beyond appearances and into deeper emotional and existential layers.
